Madeira Mamoré Railway

Madeira Mamoré Railway (363∙4 km), für Rechnung der brasilianischen Regierung von einer nordamerikanischen Gesellschaft mit 1 m-Spur erbaut, 1912 eröffnet. Die Bahn bezweckt die Umgehung der infolge gewaltiger Stromschnellen unfahrbaren Schiffstrecken im Mittellauf des Amazonenstroms, etwa in der Gegend, wo der Mamoré- und Benifluß zusammenströmen und sich zum Madeira vereinigen. Mit Hilfe der Bahn besteht ein Verbindungsweg von der Mündung des Amazonas bis hinauf nach Trinidad, im Quellauf des Mamoré, und für kleinere Fahrzeuge sogar noch weiter bis Chimoré, 6 Tagreisen oberhalb von Guajaramerin. Damit ist ein neuer Verkehrsweg bis ins Herz von Bolivia eröffnet.

Die Bahn sollte ursprünglich in Santo Antonio beginnen, wo die Stromschnellenstrecke des Madeira ihr Ende erreicht und die ununterbrochene Schiffbarkeit des Flusses bis zum Ozean beginnt. Mit Rücksicht auf die ungünstige klimatische Beschaffenheit dieses Ortes verschob man den Anfangspunkt eine Stunde stromabwärts nach dem neuen Orte Porto Velho. Der Endpunkt ist Guajaramerin.

Da die brasilianische Regierung außer stande war, ihren finanziellen Verpflichtungen gegenüber der M. nachzukommen, ist die M. im Oktober 1914 unter Zwangsverwaltung geraten. Ihr Aktienkapital umfaßt 11 Mill. Dollar, die Obligationenschuld 2∙6 Mill. Pfund (s.a. Brasilien).
